Bringing a cat from the USA to the Netherlands: rules 2026

Prepared by the Animals Productions editorial team. See about us and our editorial standards.

Taking a cat from the USA to the Netherlands is a smooth EU route. The USA is EU-listed so no titer test is needed, and cats have the extra advantage of not requiring a tapeworm treatment.

From the origin country. From the USA: no titer test required. The USA is EU-listed. For cats, no tapeworm treatment required. You need: ISO 11784/11785 microchip, rabies vaccination (21-day wait), and an EU Animal Health Certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS, valid 10 days to entry.

Destination requirements

  1. ISO microchip — on or before the rabies vaccination day.
  2. Rabies vaccination — valid from day 21 after the primary dose.
  3. Titer test (only from “unlisted”/high-risk) — blood ≥30 days after vaccination, ≥0.5 IU/ml, then wait ≥90 days. (Russia and Belarus are high-risk from 16 Sep 2024.)
  4. Certificate — EU Animal Health Certificate (Annex III, Reg. (EU) 2026/705), 10 days. From the EU — EU pet passport.
  5. Tapeworm (echinococcus) — only if transiting/entering IE/FI/MT/NO/UK; not required for the Netherlands itself.
  6. Quarantine — none if requirements are met.
  7. Breeds — no national ban (verify).
  8. Commercial import only via the Schiphol BCP.

EU 2026: Regulation (EU) 2026/131 applies from 22 Apr 2026; old-format certificates valid only if issued before 1 Oct 2026.
