Bringing a dog from the USA to Portugal: rules 2026
Taking a dog from the USA to Portugal is one of the smoother EU routes. The USA's EU-listed status means no titer test, and Portugal has no additional import restrictions beyond the standard EU requirements.
Destination requirements
- ISO microchip. Rabies vaccination — pet ≥12 weeks; valid from day 21.
- Titer (only from “unlisted” third countries): ≥30 days after vaccination, ≥0.5 IU/ml, entry ≥90 days after the draw. Not needed from the EU/listed.
- Arrival notice (“Aviso de chegada”) to the entry point. Certificate — EU Animal Health Certificate (official services, 10 days) or EU pet passport.
- Tapeworm — not required for Portugal.
- Breeds — national “dangerous” list (Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila, Tosa, Staffordshire) — verify for import.
- Limit 5. No quarantine. Entry vet fee ~€42.25 (1 animal).

FAQ
Do I need a titer test to bring a dog from the USA to Portugal?
No. The USA is on the EU's approved list, so the titer test is waived. You need the microchip, rabies vaccination and a USDA-endorsed EU AHC.
How long does preparation take?
About 3–4 weeks. The rabies vaccine needs a 21-day wait, and the USDA APHIS endorsement should be done close to travel (EU AHC valid 10 days to entry).
Are there breed restrictions for dogs in Portugal?
Portugal enforces breed restrictions on certain dogs considered 'potentially dangerous' — including Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and others. Check Portuguese law before bringing restricted breeds.
Is there quarantine?
No quarantine for compliant pets from the USA.
