Taking a cat from the USA to Portugal is one of the easier transatlantic pet moves. The USA's EU-listed status means no titer test, and cats don't require a tapeworm treatment. Portugal has no additional restrictions for cats.
From the origin country. From the USA: no titer test required. The USA is EU-listed. For cats, no tapeworm treatment required. You need: ISO 11784/11785 microchip, rabies vaccination (21-day wait), and an EU Animal Health Certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS, valid 10 days to entry.
Destination requirements
- ISO microchip. Rabies vaccination — pet ≥12 weeks; valid from day 21.
- Titer (only from “unlisted” third countries): ≥30 days after vaccination, ≥0.5 IU/ml, entry ≥90 days after the draw. Not needed from the EU/listed.
- Arrival notice (“Aviso de chegada”) to the entry point. Certificate — EU Animal Health Certificate (official services, 10 days) or EU pet passport.
- Tapeworm — not required for Portugal.
- Breeds — national “dangerous” list (Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila, Tosa, Staffordshire) — verify for import.
- Limit 5. No quarantine. Entry vet fee ~€42.25 (1 animal).
